Melancthon Tope published a History
of the Tope Family in 1896 that became the foundation for
Tope family research. When Melancthon began his research is
not known, but he referred to a letter written to him on Sept 27, 1892.
Considering that all of his research had to be conducted by
mail and personal interviews, Melancthon set a standard that
descendants of John Tope, George Tope and Frederick Tope found
challenging.
Eighty-four years later, Austin Dale
Maddux revised the book to extract dates and places
from Melancthon's narrative and portray the family
information in Family Group Sheets. Dale also added
information received from descendants of the three Tope brothers.
His revision was first printed in 1980 and reprinted in 1981.
In November 2006, a number of Tope
descendants agreed to establish this Tope Family internet
site, with the
objective of encourging continued family research.

Where
page numbers in this column are missing, the page in the book had a
Family Group Sheet, or is blank.
