Jacob Tope bought a farm
about a
mile east of Leavittsville at an early day
and built upon it, farmed it and
reared his family; and here at the age of 75
years, 10 months and 26 days he died
January 6, 1877. His wife followed him
february 27 1889 at the
age of 82 years 2
months and 7 days buried
in St luke cemetery their
children were as follows:
Lavina, who died at an early age,
unmarried.
Hiram James, who was born December
24, 1825. He was married to Nancy
A. McHugh (born June 27, 1830)
September 3, 1857, at New Hagerstown, 0.
They lived on a farm for years in
Uniontownship, Carroll county, 0., and
about ten years ago he sold it to
William Davis and moved to Tullahoma,
Tenn., where they now live. They had
two children: John C., born February
19, 1858; married March 13, 1886, to
Elda Dunlap: and have had four
children: Thomas Earl, born May 2,
1887; Sherley, born Mar. 17, 1889; Alton,
born July 23, 1891 and died Feb. 23,
1894; and May, born May 23, 1895 and
died
Mar.,——1896; they live at Uhrichsville and are
engaged in the laundry
business. David R., born May, 1859;
married November 12, 1893, to Chloe
Ball; have no children; engaged in
the laundry business at Tullahoma, Tenn.
Ann, married David Rainsberger, a
farmer, of near Leavittsville, 0. Mr.
Rainsberger held some important
township offices in his day, as treasurer, etc.
He died a few years ago. They had
one son, J. H., who has been school
teacher, telegrapher, pharmacist and
leader of several cornet bands; he was
married to Frank (Sic) Springer and
they have one daughter, June; living in
Bowerston. Mrs. Rainsberger, his
mother, lives on the old place.
The next three were boys, John,
Jackson and George, all of whom died
while young.
Gabriel, who was married to
Elizabeth McHugh. He was one of 'ye olden
time skule teachers"; for years he
has owned a small farm about two miles
north of Leavittsville, 0., and now
gives considerable attention to legal matters. Their children were four in
number: A daughter that died young, Homer
W., who taught a number of schools,
graduated at Philadelphia, Pa., as a
Lutheran minister and preached
several years at'Youngston, 0., but was
recently called to Chicago, where he
is now located at 782 Lanabee street; he
married Alice Moughiman and they
have one son, Richard. Beldon, who was
married to Daisy Crawford and live
now at Dell Roy, 0.; they have some
children, we think, but as we got no
reply to our letter of inquiry, cannot say
further; he is a teamster. Thomas,
who was married to Hattie Rainsberger;
they have one child; and live at
home with his father.
Thomas J. Tope, who still lives at
the old home; not married, but he ought
to be, or he will be an old
bachelor, sure! He has held the office of Township
Treasurer, and is a good, jovial
fellow generally.
William T. Tope, who was a
school-teacher and farmer in early life. He still
owns a farm and poses as an
Infirmary Director of Carroll county, residing
about two miles east of
Leavittsville. His wife's maiden name was Rose Garrett. They have three
children, as
follows: Oilie, who is married to Walter
Brooks; they have one child. And
Ross and Thomas, unmarried, at home.
9. Stephen Tope (a twin) was born in
Jefferson county, Ohio, February 10,
1801. This fact, coupled with the
fact that he was often known to remark that
he "was born two miles east of
Salem," corraborates the statement that the
Topes came into Ohio in 1800. George
Tope, his father, only lived there less
than two years and the dates and
statements agree.
