three children: Vosie,
Laura and one
who died in infancy. His wife died in
Carroll county, and he married again
in Gallia county, Susa Thormon, and
has two more sons: Heber and
Emmett—Christy Ann died July 8,
1847—-Lauretta is still at
home unmarried. This makes him (the 3rd George)
66 grand-children and 21
great-grand-children, in whom he takes great interest. He is a farmer
living at
White post-office, 0. He is serving his third
term as justice of the
peace
(d) Jacob J. Tope married Mary Jane
Brown, sister of Joshua Brown of
Tunnel Hill, near Bowerston, 0.
There were born to them four children- John
W., George W., William A. and Mary.
He died on Old Town valley near new Philadelphia, 0., in 1861, aged 41
years. He lived when voung at New
Hagerstown, and worked at the
blacksmith trade. His wife is still living, married again, we think,
but does not
live handv to us.
Of his children, John W. was born at
New Philadelphia November 8 in
1845. He was married to a Miss
Whaple, studied medicine with Dr. J. D Otis
(now deceased), of New Philadelphia,
0., graduated from Rush Medical College, Chicago, in 1870, and is
practicing medicine at Oak Park in 111. George
W. was born near New Philadelphia,
married a Miss Romie and they have
three children: Wm., H. lately
married to Marie E. McKinney, of Scio 0
and Walter Ross and Laura Grace at
home. He is a farmer and a stock-dealer living about four miles west of
New
Philadelphia, 0. William A was born at
New Philadelphia, July 12, 1860,
married Fannie Weatherby of Port
Washington, 0., May 25, 1887, and
they have two children: A son of 6, and a
daughter of 4 years. He, too,
studied medicine with Dr. Otis, graduated from
Rush Medical College, Chicago, and
is practicing medicine at Downer's
Grove, 111. He is also vice
president of the Farmers'^and Merchants' Bank of
that place. Mary, their sister,
married John Heaston, who is a farmer- they live
near New Philadelphia, 0.
(e) Stephen Tope married "Polly"
Barlean. To these there were born two
children: A boy and a girl. Stephen
died of fever in 1855 at New Hagerstown
and was buried in the Tabor
cemetery. He was a great carpenter, and built a
number of houses and barns in and
about New Hagerstown and Bowerston
His widow married a Mr. Baker and
lives at Alliance, 0.
(f John Tope was married to Mary
("Pollv") Tope, of Jackson county 0.
They had four children: Franklin,
William, Cordelia and Loa. Mary, his wife
died some years ago and was buried
at Portland, Jackson county, 0. He has
followed carpentering nearly all his
life. Address is Jackson Court-House, 0.
2. Susan Tope was married to Thomas
Patterson, of Irish descent, of Jefferson county, 0. They lived for a
while about a mile from Richmond, same
county. Then moved to where Thomas
Brooks now lives in Carroll county,
next to where John Sells lives, near
Algonquin, same county, and then to
Tuscarawas county, near Roxford, and
bought a piece of land there, on which
he lived until his death. It is
thought that his wife died there also. They had a
number of children: George, Thomas,
William, John, Jacob, Stephen
Charles, Kate and Betsy. Thomas,
Jr., had a crippled hand and traveled over
the country quite a good deal. He
was a great fellow to chop wood, which he
would do with the one hand. He was
almost notorious as a mush eater. The
writer has seen him several times;
and, indeed, who does not remember of seeing "Jim" Patterson? He
finally died
in the Carroll countv infirmary. We are
not informed as to the others.
